Trails
When you visit the Conservation Lands, you can walk along marked trails that are maintained by the Town. Trail maps are available. If you leave the marked trail, be sure to carry a compass and topographical map. If you follow other trails, be sure you can backtrack.
Watching Wildlife
Be sure to give yourself enough time to enjoy the solitude of the Conservation Lands. Time and patience are necessary to observe wildlife, but it's worth it to see the deer browse or hear turkeys gobble.
To protect the land:
- Foot traffic only.
- Carry in, carry out trash.
- Do not cut trees or pick rare flowers.
- Tread lightly in wetlands.
- Respect the neighbors, especially at the trailhead.
To protect yourself:
- Take proper precautions with clothing and insect repellent to guard against ticks.
- Carry water.
- Stay on marked trails.
- If you leave the trails, carry a compass and topographical map. Realize that the Commons is wild country with intermittent wetlands and thick brush.
During Hunting Season
- Whitetail deer hunting season runs Monday through Saturday, starting with the last week in October and ending the last week of November. Hunting is not permitted on Sundays.
- Wear blaze orange. Avoid wearing brown or white clothing.
- If you observe a hunter, call out and make your presence known.
Guidelines for Hunters
The Conservation Lands attract non-hunting visitors during hunting season.
- It is your obligation to take rigorous precautions to avoid injuring or frightening other visitors.
- If hunting in the Fenderson Commons, remember that the marked trail loops for a mile. The trail is marked with sky-blue signs.
- Be constantly aware of humans and do not make any move that could possibly lead to tragedy.
- Keep your gun down until you are sure of your target.
